Project Engineer / Mechanical Design Engineer
Northamptonshire
£40,000 - £50,000
Permanent | Office Based
Are you a Mechanical Design Engineer looking for a role where you can take ownership of projects from initial concept through to manufacture and commissioning?
I’m working with an established engineering manufacturer in Northamptonshire who is looking to add an experienced Project Engineer to their design team.
Despite the title, this is a very hands-on mechanical design role. You’ll be working predominantly in SolidWorks, producing machinery designs, general arrangement drawings and manufacturing drawings, while also managing BOMs and supporting projects through the full engineering lifecycle.
What you’ll be doing
Designing and developing mechanical equipment using SolidWorks Producing detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings Creating general arrangement drawings and plant/system layouts Designing fabricated and sheet metal components and assemblies Creating, maintaining and releasing Bills of Materials (BOMs) through the company MRP system Working closely with manufacturing to take designs from concept through to production Supporting projects from initial design and customer approval through manufacture, installation and commissioning Liaising with customers and suppliers on technical requirements Attending site where required to take measurements and support layouts/design development Working with the wider project, sales and manufacturing teams to deliver equipment to specification, budget and deadline
What I’m looking for
The essentials:
Advanced SolidWorks skills Around 5+ years' experience within mechanical design, project engineering or a similar role Experience designing sheet metal, fabricated equipment and/or heavy machinery Strong experience producing general arrangement drawings Experience creating and managing BOMs Comfortable taking designs through into manufacture
Experience with any of the following would be a big advantage:
Conveyors or material handling equipment Special purpose machinery Recycling or processing machinery AutoCAD Structural steelwork, platforms, walkways or support structures ERP/MRP systems Taking projects through installation and commissioning
You don't need to come from a structural engineering background. The priority is finding a strong mechanical designer who understands manufactured machinery, can produce accurate drawings and can take ownership of their designs through the full project lifecycle.
