CAD to Manufacturing Drafter / Detailer (Structural Steel Frames & Architectural Metalwork)
Expanding steelwork and metalwork fabrication business have a new role for a CAD to Manufacturing Drafter/Detailer to turn design/structural CAD information into fabrication-ready drawings and clear workshop instructions. The work spans structural steel frames as well as a wide variety of architectural and miscellaneous metalwork and will involve elements of design.
The Role (Key Responsibilities):
Produce accurate fabrication/manufacturing drawings from structural/architectural drawings and project information. Detail structural steelwork (frames, beams/columns, plates/brackets, connections/cleats as required) and architectural metalwork (stairs, balustrades/handrails, balconies, feature metalwork). Create full fabrication packs: GA drawings, part drawings, assembly drawings, BOMs/material lists, cut lists, hole schedules and part numbering. Add workshop-ready information including weld symbols, bolt specs, tolerances, finishes/coatings and assembly/installation notes. Produce or support CNC/laser/plasma-ready DXF outputs where required, working with production/CNC colleagues to ensure files are correct. Liaise with project managers, engineers, and the shop floor to resolve technical queries, reduce rework, and ensure designs are buildable. Maintain drawing revisions/document control and issue-for-manufacture (IFM) updates promptly.
What We're Looking For (Essential):
Proven experience producing fabrication/manufacturing drawings in a steel/metalwork environment (typically 2-5+ years). Strong CAD skills. Good understanding of fabrication processes (welding, cutting, drilling, folding), tolerancing, and practical build constraints. High attention to detail, good communication, and the ability to manage multiple jobs to deadlines.
Desirable:
Tekla/Advance Steel modelling and steelwork detailing experience. Experience detailing stairs/handrails/balconies and understanding of site fit-up considerations. Ability to generate DXF/CNC-ready outputs and support nesting/material optimisation. Portfolio examples showing structural steel and architectural metalwork drawings.
Location, Hours & Package:
Location: Essex (office-based with regular workshop interaction; occasional site visits may be required). Hours: Full-time, (part time may be considered).
This is a permanent job with a starting salary dependant on experience. You must have current UK right to work to be considered. HRGO are a recruitment agency supporting UK engineering. We aim to respond to all applications.
