The Opportunity
As Senior Legal Counsel – Business Banking, you’ll leverage your industry expertise and commercial acumen to deliver proactive, strategic legal advice to our Business Banking team. Your focus will be on transaction management, streamlining processes to reduce completion times by collaborating with panel solicitors to efficiently agree and finalise commercial lending facilities (including syndicated loans and project finance) and security documents.
You’ll act as the first point of contact for the Business Banking Relationship Managers and Lending Operations Teams, triaging queries to and from external panel solicitors to ensure lending transactions progress smoothly to completion.
This role offers the benefits of flexible hybrid working, with an expectation to be in our Bristol office 1-2 days a week and the option to work from home on the other days.
Key Responsibilities
As Senior Legal Counsel – Business Banking, you will:
Provide specialist legal support for Business Banking lending transactions (£5M–£40M+), including syndicated loans and project finance, while managing legal risk across the team. Lead transaction execution by instructing and liaising with panel solicitors, reviewing fee quotes (and recommending adjustments where necessary), and assessing borrower solicitor suitability. Act as the central point of contact, triaging queries between panel solicitors, Relationship Managers, and Lending Operations to streamline workflows and meet deadlines. Review and approve facility agreements, security documents, and Reports on Title, flagging risks and proposing solutions to avoid delays. Collaborate with Lending Operations to ensure documentation aligns with back-office systems and proactively resolve bottlenecks. Advise relevant internal stakeholders on loan documentation, enforcement scenarios, and policy compliance, while maintaining/updating precedents to reflect legal and regulatory requirements and internal values. In conjunction with Head of Legal actively manage the Bank's selection of, and ongoing relationship with, approved panel solicitors for the Business Banking Team. Ensure that internal controls and governance are adhered to and followed and demonstrate adherence by keeping appropriate records.
